Meta History

last edited 2026/01/08

i thought it would be interesting to have a page for the sort of meta history of this world. i actually originally wrote this a while ago, just for myself, and updated it a bit in 2026 to finally put it on the site. i might still come back and edit or rewrite parts, or do something about the giant images. but for now...

the history of savirell begins with the first characters that i eventually made the world for, so:

in 2013, i made a new fursona - morning. in 2014, i redesigned her, then decided to make the new version its own character instead - dawn. by 2015, they started to develop their own story as morning and dawn shine. they were always sisters with... a lot of issues.

the earliest versions of their stories were never very solid, but they mostly just... hated each other, for one reason or another.

for a while dawn was kind of a "reincarnation" of a god - hello, who became the god of a new universe as the last being alive in a previous one. again though, the stories changed a lot. morning being the god instead, dawn being possessed by something else (that being the explanation for the crystals)... i don't even remember these things that well.

however, savirell itself technically begins in 2014, too; a brief attempt at a comic (obviously homestuck-inspired...) called "adventures on emryn" - emryn being the name of the planet that i put... basically all of my characters on, at the time.

i made a map with some generator, and it was basically just a tiny continent (visible in the image) and an even tinier island on the opposite side of the planet (which iirc was where dawn or morning lived. or something).

i made exactly 13 panels of it, and got as far as introducing scratch and then showing dawn and two of my other characters before giving up/forgetting about it.

in 2015, the story became that morning and dawn's home planet was invaded by... this character ↑ iirc her name was andromeda at first, and then i made it confusing by giving it to a different character and calling her cassiopeia instead.

anyway, dawn fought her and lost - andromeda/cassiopeia ripped one of her horns off as a trophy. losing the mass would've been the explanation for the gaping chest hole and then crystals replacing the missing bits...

in 2017, i made probably the first lineup of species in savirell, or at least what would eventually become it... as you can see, only gaians, astrovores, and magmeres are still present and recognizable in savirell now (though akathes began development as a mix of syno and luvapi!). later that year, i also redesigned cassiopeia as an actual alien - the first draft of skorizas.

i also made the first "site" (set of pages, really) for the world, just called [starmap]. it was just a list of the relevant planets, but to be honest i don't hate it... the aesthetics are neat, at least. i also just called the world "hell universe" lol

2017 is probably when i actually named the world savirell, since i made the first (as far as i remember, at least) actual doc on the species of savirell. well, more like a folder of rtf files lol... i planned to do these references for all the species i had made for it, but only ended up doing one and a half...

yes, the name was and still is just letter soup based on "solar universe hell". it's got charm.

in 2018, i made another attempt at a savirell site, this time stylized as that command line type of interface. the images were pixel, also in that monochrome green palette. unfortunately, i really struggled with my display being scaled up and the fact that centering elements on the page made the pixels blurry at every other width, which is part of why i eventually abandoned this version. the current iteration of the savirell wiki is inspired by this one, though!

in 2020, i made this version, inspired by the aesthetic of [starmap]. it stuck around for a while, but i still didn't end up writing much about all of the species... it's still kinda neat, though

in the meantime, the world continued to evolve; thinking about the story, adding lore, redesigning the species and characters (and doing it again, and again...), refining the vibes... lots of thinking. and messing around. as you do.

with 2022 came some pretty major redesigns of all the species, and an effort to actually get all the info down somewhere. as of right now, the site is still using the art i did then for gaians (they're the only species that hasn't changed basically at all, for pretty obvious reasons)

i ended up taking a break from trying to get the info on a custom site, since it was an extra layer of work to deal with on top of the visuals and writing, and "the crushing weight of 1 manageable task" etc etc.

i coded a simple species info thing for toyhouse because the limitation is kind of fun, and then tried putting my shit on world anvil instead (i did not enjoy it, in part because the default free acc theme is very medieval fantasy. but having some guidance on the structure while writing can be helpful...)

at some point in 2022 i also started coding heliOS, mostly to play around with the older tech aesthetic again, inspired by the first proper savirell site. in the meantime, i moved all the info i had to a single doc.

in late 2023 i felt it was finished enough to make it public, and since then... well, the site has a changelog, so you can judge for yourself how sporadic the updates are!
